Decanter Magazine warns that the wines of Lapierre “sell out fast, so buy when you see”. 2017 was another sunny and high-quality vintage, so don’t sleep on this one. Especially in light of wine critic James Suckling scoring this “super wild and attractive” Beaujolais at 95 points.
Marcel Lapierre was a pioneer of the natural wine movement and biodynamic farming. In fact, his Morgon has been described by some as “The Original Natural Wine”. Despite his untimely death in 2010, the wines – now produced by his son Mathieu and daughter Camille – continue to be hugely sought-after all around the globe.
Lapierre’s wines are always some of the finest in all of Beaujolais, and this vintage is no exception, being described by Wine Advocate as a “friendly rendition of this storied cuvée”. An explosion of black cherry, violet, plum, liquorice and smouldering wood on a meat-laden barbeque, this is a wonderfully refreshing summer wine, but can be kept for up to five years and enjoyed anytime.
