Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Rioja Blanco 1986
100 points, “One of the greatest white wines ever produced in Spain… It fills your mouth, tickles your taste buds and makes you salivate… I think this is a perfect wine.” – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate
100 points, “This is a triumph… Another perfect wine.” – James Suckling
Released three decades after the vintage having spent 21 years in oak, six in cement tanks and three in the bottle, this is truly exceptional white Rioja, maybe one of the greatest wines ever created. Marqués de Murrieta’s Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Rioja Blanco is the only dry Spanish white wine to receive a perfect score from Wine Advocate, and it has done it three times, starting with 1919, then 1932 and now 1986. Another release of this wine is not expected for at least a decade.
With a longevity expected to span half a century by the critics, this is deeply umami, creamy, saline and beeswaxy. Displaying barbequed pineapple, marmalade, applesauce, lemon curd, toasted almonds, sautéed mushrooms, Earl Grey tea and a remarkable freshness considering its age; this is a once in a lifetime wine and a unique and fleeting opportunity.
