96+ points “The 2017 release of the Meerlust Rubicon represents another classical expression of this fabulous Cape Icon wine… another classical year of exceptional quality the vintage will surely be remembered for its stand-out elegance seamless palate textures and its signature weightless intensity and concentration… This really is another exquisite vintage with charm and poise Grand Vin potency and an overt unbridled determination to deliver long-term drinking pleasure.” – Greg Sherwood MW

The experts at Wine Advocate had never rated a year in South Africa as highly as 2015 until 2017 came along which they placed on a par. The 2015 was the fast-selling Rubicon release on record and we expect this exceptional 2017 to follow suit.

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is hugely dense pumped full of hedgerow brambles blackcurrants black plums creamy Black Forest gateau hoisin sauce Chinese five spice Italian fennel sausages salty black olives cigar box liqueur chocolates and cedar. First made in 1980 this vintage demonstrates how Rubicon just seems to get better and better with each passing year. Serve alongside slow-cooked winter fare and let it warm you with all that South African sunshine.

Julius Caesar changed the course of Roman politics when he and his troops crossed the Rubicon in 49BC and from that there was no turning back. Some two millennia later Nico Myburgh changed the course of South African wine when inspired by the wines of Bordeaux he blended his Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot together something that had rarely done before that point. Meerlust Rubicon was born and there has been no turning back for South African wine.

The Myburgh family has been making wine at Meerlust Estate for eight generations stretching back to 1756 - to think that some people call this the New World! Drive up the long palm tree-lined driveway and you’ll discover the iconic white manor house on top of a granite outcrop 5km from False Bay. The hot vineyards are cooled by the refreshing ocean breezes helping the Myburghs to create wines with finesse.
