Estate Red 2019
92 points, “A wonderfully complex aromatic array of black plum, blackberry compote, orange peel, Christmas pudding over hints of pressed violets, sweet cedar spice and graphite nuances. The palate is plush and fleshy from the word go, showing an open knit, expressive opulence of redcurrant, bramble berry, blackcurrant, sweet oak spice, black tea and a sleek texture that simply embraces the palate and makes you go back again and again for another sip. Refreshingly vibrant and impressively generous, I suspect this wine will age surprisingly well for over 10+ years even though it’s simply a cracking drinker right now on release. Hats off to the entire Meerlust crew.” – Greg Sherwood MW
Meerlust constantly amazes us. Their ability to produce exceptional wines in both a Bordeaux- and Burgundy-style is uncanny. Packed with South African sunshine and charm, their 2019 Estate Red is a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. This exquisite red should be considered the second wine to the more expensive and world-famous Rubicon, and as such, it offers incredible value for money. We love how this vegan-friendly blend is constantly evolving and changing. Last year’s contained no Cabernet Sauvignon whatsoever, but this year that grape dominates this Bordeaux-style blend. So, each new vintage offers something a little different for fans.
Big, juicy and round, Meerlust Red is an eruption of cassis, plum crumble, roasted red pepper, blackberry, dark chocolate, vanilla, dried herbs, Earl Grey tea and exotic spices. This ever-popular style is the full-bodied kind that caused us to all fall in love with New World wine in the first place, and it’s screaming out for barbeques, steaks and robust flavours.
The Myburgh family has been making wine at Meerlust Estate for eight generations stretching back to 1756. And to think that some people call this the New World! Drive up the long, palm tree-lined driveway and you’ll discover the iconic white manor house atop a granite outcrop 5km from False Bay. The hot vineyards are cooled by the refreshing ocean breezes, helping the Myburghs to create wines with finesse.
