Miyagikyo 1986 Cask #80283 Single Malt Japanese Whisky
“Superb… A big, concentrated dram that stands water perfectly well this time. At 63%, it’ll make for two bottles for the price of one – almost.” – Serge Valentin of WhiskyFun.com
A highly collectable release from one of Japan’s rarer distilleries. This Nikka Miyagikyo was distilled in 1986 – the International Year of Peace and the year that the average per capita income in Japan surpassed that of the United States – and filled into a re-charred butt called Cask #80283. Stored in Warehouse No.23, it was bottled in 2008 at a punchy cask strength of 63% and just shy of becoming a 22 Year Old.
Hailing from Japan’s largest island, Honshu, this Miyagikyo is big and funky. Expect moist peat, something reminiscent of damp camping trips (think wet grass, mud and campfires), mixed citrus peel, smoked meat, passionfruit, overripe mango, raspberries, dark chocolate, mint, lapsang souchong, marmalade and lots of wood. Challenging, gamey and spectacular; it almost feels like the Jamaican rum of Japanese whisky.
Nikka’s second distillery, Miyagikyo, was built in Sendai 30 years after their first, Yoichi. The idea was to provide a softer counterpoint to Yoichi’s peat smoke and maritime edge. Enclosed by mountains and surrounded by rivers and forests, Miyagikyo delivers more fruit and Sherry influence. Any rare release from this distillery instantly becomes a must-have for serious Japanese whisky aficionados and collectors.
