Barolo Riserva 2000 - Pio Cesare

Pio Cesare

Barolo Riserva 2000

£275.00

96 points, “Bottled in 2005 after spending over four years in oak, 500 bottles of this 2000 Riserva have been re-released in 2021 in celebration of the estate's 140th anniversary. A delightful, characterful nose of macerated berries, menthol, chocolate, Parma violets, tobacco, leather, earth and wood lead to a silky, lively palate. Time has allowed the tannins to integrate but they still provide filigreed structure. There's a touch of yeast extract as well as notes of truffle, damp earth, black cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry and hedgerow fruits. It's very balsamic on the mid-palate, with smooth wood and chocolate notes emerging, followed by a long black and white pepper finish. Extraordinarily beautiful.” – Decanter

96 points, “From the winery’s private cellars, this limited edition, just-released Riserva has aromas of forest floor and blue flowers enhanced with delicate whiffs of tar and French oak. Combining the freshness of youth and the complexity of age, the elegant, full-bodied palate delivers dried cherry, cranberry compote, liquorice and tobacco alongside underbrush notes. Tightly knit, silky tannins give it a smooth, enveloping texture. Drink through to 2030.” – Wine Enthusiast

96 points, “A fresh yet aged Barolo, showing the wealth and glory of the great 2000 vintage… A fantastic wine now and will continue to age beautifully.” – James Suckling

The late, great Pio Boffa always squirreled away a few bottles of the best vintages. Most were consumed with friends and family. But some got released, like this one. Only 500 bottles of this immaculate Barolo Riserva 2000 were made, and we managed to secure six of them.

Pio Cesare was established in 1881 and was run by the fifth generation of the family, Pio Boffa, until 2021, when he sadly passed away after battling Covid-19. His daughter, Federica, has now taken over the business and carries on her father’s legacy with passion and determination. As one of the first producers to truly start shouting about the immense potential of the Piedmont region’s wines and one of the first to export to the UK, Pio Cesare has always been an industry leader. And as Wine Advocate quite rightly notes: “You have to love the energy and dynamic thinking that comes out of this historic cellar located in the city centre of Alba.”
