Extrême No.3 HJC 22 Year Old Jamaican Rum
Only 1,000 bottles were made for the worldwide market of the Extrême No.3 HJC 22-Year-Old Jamaican Rum. We hope they won’t sell out before we can explain what HJC means…
The third release in the Extrême range comprises two separate rums: ITP and HJC. Both come from the Long Pond Distillery in Jamaica, were distilled in 1996, and spent 21 years maturing in Bourbon casks before heading to France to spend an additional year in Ferrand casks. Tropical rums of this age are incredibly rare. Both were bottled at cask strength, but each one was distilled to a slightly different “recipe”.
Each Jamaican distillery classifies its rum production based on their specific marques, which correspond to the content of esters after distillation. Esters are the aromatic chemical compounds created during fermentation, and these determine how heavy the rum is. ITP and HJC are Long Pond Distillery’s unique marques, with ITP distilled slightly lighter and HJC being distilled slightly heavier. Having said that, the ester levels of both have been significantly ramped up by over two decades in oak cask, creating a pair of full-bodied and funky Jamaican rums. HJC is rich with orange peel, chamomile, dark molasses, juniper, buttery apple tart, apricot pastry drizzled with honey, caramelised banana, poached spiced pear, wood oven smoke and fresh Provençal herbs. It’s a wonderful addition to any rum collection, and even better with its partner ITP alongside it.
In the late 1980s, Alexandre Gabriel of the Cognac house Maison Ferrand set off on an adventure to scour the Caribbean in search of the region’s finest rums. His passion gave birth to Plantation, an artisanal range of rums from the great terroirs of the tropics. Combining French savoir-faire with Caribbean joie de vivre, Plantation’s outturn is a treasure trove for rum lovers and spirits enthusiasts.
In July 2018 there was a large fire at Long Pond Distillery and over 65,000 litres of rum were destroyed. Luckily nobody was hurt and the historic distillery is still standing, but it may be some time before we see more rums like Extrême No.3 ITP and HJC.
