To call this a classic Port is a massive understatement. Compared to other producers Ramos Pinto own a huge proportion of vineyards giving them almost complete control from vine to wine. The grapes are still stomped by foot and the wine is aged for two years in oak then a further two in the bottle before release.

Now this twenty-something Port has become dark and brooding; all pumped up with blackberries stewed plums dried fruit prunes cedar warming cinnamon and wildflowers. Decant a couple of hours before you want to drink it and treat this Port to the cheeseboard it deserves – the stinkier the better.

Ramos Pinto is a name to be reckoned with. Firstly they are owned by the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful and discerning families who also look after Champagne Louis Roederer Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Domaines Ott Maison Delas and Champagne Deutz. Secondly they were founded back in 1880 and played a leading role in defining the best grape varieties for the whole Douro Valley.
