The Mavrodaphne grape famously produces rich, sweet red wine. However, this distinctive number is dry as a bone. Made from the finest clone – called Tsigello – grown on the Slopes of Aigialeia in Northern Peloponnese, lovingly vinified and aged for three months in French oak barrels and handmade clay amphorae. Exploding with berries, bay leaf, rosemary, cocoa-dusted coffee truffles and Arabian spices, this cries out for lamb rubbed with ras el hanout, Middle Eastern mezze and roasted vegetables.
At the helm of this exceptional winery is the vastly experienced and talented Theodora Rouvali – an oenologist with an MSc in viticulture who has studied in Athens, Valencia and Burgundy, and has worked at Clos de Tart in Burgundy, Château Margaux in Bordeaux, Domaine Muré in Alsace, Villa Maria in New Zealand, and a couple of producers in Chile. Buying a Rouvalis wine, you know you are in particularly safe hands.
