Savage Red 2019
95+ points, “Like some of the greatest expression of Syrah in Côte-Rôtie, this wine shows a focused prowess and concentration together with an opulent richness framed by an underlying stony minerality. A wine with undeniable focus and structure but also a surfeit of seductive charm.” – Greg Sherwood MW
“Duncan Savage thinks he hasn’t hit his full potential yet. Heaven help his rivals when he does.” – Tim Atkin MW
The Savage Red 2019 is crafted using pure, organic, Stellenbosch Syrah. Matured in small French oak barrels for around a year, followed by a further rest in huge wooden vats, it’s enthralling stuff that gives the Rhône Valley’s finest a run for their money. Dark, intense and engaging, kind of like a good drama, it captures the attention with black cherry, blackberry bush, cured meat, black olive, woody spices and damson flavours, and then it locks you in for the long haul with twists and turns of savoury, floral and peppery notes. We won’t spoil the ending though, you’ll have to find that out for yourself, if you’re lucky enough to bag one before they’re all snapped up by Savage Wines’ adoring fans.
Having spent 11 years working at Cape Point Vineyards, a five-star-rated winery according to Platter’s Wine Guide, and having thoroughly mastered maritime and high-altitude winemaking, Duncan Savage fulfilled his dream of creating his very own wines when he released his maiden 2011 Red and 2012 White. The quality of those wines rocketed this young talent into the spotlight, and they’ve been a favourite at Harvey Nichols ever since. After moving into a new urban winery in Salt River, Cape Town, the strength of Savage Wines range has soared, and these cult South African wines often sell out on release.
