Tasting Notes
Great Scotto!
This unassuming little number is possibly the best value red wine ever to grace Harvey Nichols’ shelves.
Scotto Old Vine Zinfandel is what we would call ‘a gulper’. So smooth and so comforting, you just gulp it down. Juicy black cherry liqueur, cassis, plum crumble, blackberry, chocolate, creamy vanilla, a little rhubarb tang and lots of rustic charm; simply delightful. Smile inducing, it reminds us of one of those wines you fall in love with on holiday. But what we really adore about it is that where some Californian Zinfandel can be super heavy and high in alcohol, Scotto is medium bodied and only 13.5%, making it a crowd-pleasing choice for barbeques, Italian classics, spicy stews or just a quiet night in with a film.
Dominic Scotto moved his family from the Italian island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples to America in 1903. The winemaking skills he brought with him have been passed down through the generations; Scotto Family Wines is now run by Dominic’s great grandson Anthony. Their vegan-friendly Zinfandel comes from Lodi, one of the oldest and most distinctive areas for this grape variety. It’s the kind of wine that tastes even better on the second day, so save some leftovers to enjoy it with.
