Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay comes from a single vineyard in Napa Valley’s Carneros District. The small-clustered clones planted on it produce low yields of concentrated fruit with a unique flavour. Fermentation takes place predominantly in individual oak barrels (75%) with the remainder in stainless steel tanks using native yeasts. Matured for 14 months in the same mix of French oak and steel it’s a plush and exotic Chardonnay. Unusually this wine does not undergo a malolactic fermentation which imparts an atypical freshness and zesty acidity. In the 1970s John Shafer packed in his morning commute in Chicago for driving a TD-9 tractor around vineyards in Napa Valley. Some of the vineyards that the Shafers purchased were first planted in the 1880s so had quite the pedigree. This pioneering spirit was rewarded as Shafer has been called “one of the world’s greatest wineries” by Robert Parker. They get all their power from solar panels and have donated five acres of their land to the Wildlife Rescue Center of Napa County.
