Sauvignon Blanc 2016
South African Sauvignon Blanc sits wonderfully between the potency of New Zealand and the refinement of the Loire, unassumingly offering the best of both worlds. There’s no finer example of this than Southern Right, and that’s why The Wall Street Journal listed it in their “Sauvignon Blanc for the Savvy: A Global Guide to 10 Top Bottles.”
Instantly recognisable by the whale on the label, Southern Right can be found on the western border of the legendary Hamilton Russell Vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and is under the same ownership. Their Sauvignon Blanc is a crunchy affair, as it were plucked from your refrigerator’s crisper rather than South Africa’s Cape. There’s gooseberry, tarragon, nettle, grass, lemon, grapefruit, poblano pepper and zingy ginger. This wine is screaming out for greenery; think asparagus, salads, guacamole, broccoli, padrón peppers, Thai green curry and the garden.
For each bottle of Southern Right sold, a donation is made to the conservation of the southern right whales that frequent neighbouring Walker Bay, or the conservation of the surrounding area. Only around 10,000 of these beautiful barnacle-encrusted creatures remain, so this wine is quite literally a life saver.
