This rich creamy and salty Blended Malt Scotch Whisky was created J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd – the owners of Springbank (where they also make Longrow and Hazelburn) and Glengyle (home to Kilkerran) distilleries. To create it they used all five malts from Campbeltown’s three distilleries so there’s also some Glen Scotia in the mix. The components were matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks before being vatted and bottled at Springbank.

It tastes like a whistle-stop tour of Campeltown combining the complexity of Springbank the peat smoke of Longrow the smoothness of Hazelburn the coastal salinity of Kilkerran and finally a splash of something fruity from Scotland’s Distillery of the Year 2021 Glen Scotia. The classic maritime feel is unmistakably Campbeltown and it pulses with butterscotch lemon posset toffee apple floral honey salted caramel baked apricots crème caramel spiced gingerbread oatcakes seaweed and sweet peat smoke. If you’re unfamiliar with Campbeltown then this is the perfect introduction. If you are familiar with Campbeltown we’ll assume this bottle is already in your basket.

Once home to some thirty distilleries Campbeltown was a major player in the world of whisky. However most of them have long since gone out of business and now only a handful remain. The most famous is Springbank who also produce the peated Longrow and the triple-distilled and completely unpeated Hazelburn. Established in 1828 by Archibald Mitchell Springbank is one of the few Scottish distilleries that has remained in the hands of the founding family J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd. In fact it’s the oldest independent family-owned distillery in Scotland. This family are also the force behind the Glengyle distillery where Kilkerran is made. So really without that first illicit still set up by Archibald Mitchell and the spirit kept alive by his ancestors there would probably be no whisky from Campbeltown and Scotch would be all the poorer for it.
