American Oak Single Cask Tasmanian Single Malt Whisky 2017
An incredibly rare bottling and without a doubt one of the finest New World whiskies ever created, but it’s extremely hard to come by unless you’re willing to fly to the other side of the planet. This is Sullivans Cove’s most decorated Single Malt, which considering the size of their awards cabinet is really saying something. What’s more, Patrick Maguire – the Head Distiller at Sullivans Cove who was inducted into the global Whisky Hall of Fame in 2018 – says this is his favourite.
The first ever Australian Whisky to achieve ‘Liquid Gold’ status in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, Sullivans Cove American Oak Single Cask was crowned a ‘Master’ (the highest rank possible) at the World Whisky Masters in 2018 and World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards in the same year. It’s made using Tasmanian barley and pure water from the neighbouring rainforest, which are distilled in a locally built pot still called Myrtle, and then the spirit is aged in a single 200 litre ex-Bourbon barrel. What is drawn from that cask is rich and creamy with a real sense of the original barley; there’s vanilla, runny honey, tropical fruit salad, salted caramel, cinnamon, jelly beans, aniseed balls and so much more. It’s truly glorious.
Established in 1994, Sullivans Cove is currently the name on the lips of all whisky connoisseurs. Already Australia’s most highly awarded whisky, they won “World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt” at the World Whiskies Awards in 2018 and 2019 – the only distillery to be bestowed this honour twice. Displaying an amazingly steep learning curve, Sullivans Cove went from being just OK in the early days to be one of the finest on the planet within the space of a couple of decades. Watch this space because if they continue on this trajectory the sky’s the limit.
