Altano Douro White 2020
The 2018 vintage of this white was one of the “Wines of the Week” on Jancis Robinson’s website during the Covid-19 lockdown, and is apparently “an ideal wine for a crisis”. According to her expert reviewer “it tastes absolutely superb” and “in such uncertain times, wine [like this] can provide precious moments of pleasure”. And the 2020 is every bit as good.
Altano Douro Branco is a blend of Malvasia Fina, Viosinho, Rabigato and Moscatel Galego grown at Quinta da Fonte Branca, which is run by a retired member of the Symington family. The vineyard is located in the town of Lamego, which is in the Douro’s coolest subregion and as a result the wine has wonderful floral and herbal aromas. Surprisingly weighty for an unoaked Portuguese white, but it’s fresh and soft, making it dangerously easy to drink for any occasion.
The Symington family have been making wines in the Douro Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jaw-dropping beauty – since the 19th Century. They’re the world’s leading producer of premium Port, the biggest vineyard owner in the region and one of the first wineries to start making serious Douro DOC wines. As the producers of Graham’s, Dow’s, Cockburn’s, Warre’s and Quinta do Vesuvio, they are obviously most famous for their Ports, but the Altano wines they create are a revelation.
