Tatenokawa 50 known in English as “Stream” takes its name from the sense of lightness transparency playfulness and freedom of a babbling brook. Made to a rice polishing ratio of 50% meaning that half of each grain is gently milled away it has a slightly lower alcohol level than most sake at an almost wine-like 14%. This is not an accident; this is a sake designed to impress white wine lovers. Light and fruity Streams has a vivacious charm as well as notes of red apple melon pineapple delicate spices and an intriguing umami touch reminiscent of mushrooms. This is a fantastic introduction to Tatenokawa especially for fans of white wine. So much so that we recommend drinking it out of a white wine glass.

Tatenokawa (meaning “Castle Brook”) is a sake producer with a long and illustrious history going back almost two hundred years. What we love about them is that they don’t get bogged down in all that tradition though leaving them free to innovate and spread the word of sake culture throughout the world. So expect a very modern style of sake aimed at a younger audience and also one or two very exciting celebrity collaborations. Located in Sakata City Tatenokawa was the first brewery in Yamagata Prefecture to make only Junmai Daiginjo – the most refined kind of sake. They focus on locally grown rice and particularly one called Dewasansan a sake-specific rice that creates complex slightly sweet and wonderfully aromatic flavours that remind us of top-quality Pinot Gris.
