Every year Taylor’s dip into their extensive cask-aged reserves to unveil an immense 50-year-old Port. Not to be confused with Vintage Ports (which are aged in bottle) these limited-edition Very Old Single Harvest Ports have been slowly matured in oak casks for five decades deep beneath Taylor’s lodges in Oporto. The result is the ultimate Tawny Port offering incredible value for money when you consider how much a whisky of the same age would cost.

1970 was a very special year for Port. Jancis Robinson’s summary of the vintage was: “Superb big full and deep. Should last very many years.” Which makes the Taylor’s Very Old Single Harvest 1970 – the seventh in this series – a must-have Port. Mellow aromatic and extremely complex this mahogany liquid oozes raisins hot cross buns vaults full of Madeira and Sherry marmalade walnut baklava butterscotch dusty leather-bound books in old libraries and glacé cherries dripping with syrup. On the dry finish it has a wonderful darkness reminiscent of bitter chocolate coffee beans and liquorice but there’s also a surprisingly lively acidity and green notes of matcha pistachio and menthol. Very few things have hit 50 and remained so youthful except maybe Kylie. An incredible 50th birthday or anniversary gift this rare wine makes a phenomenal accompaniment to crème brûlée cherry-laced tiffin baklava cheese and dried fruit or roasted figs and ice cream sprinkled with pistachio crumbs.

Taylor’s is the archetypal Port house synonymous with this style of wine. This is proven by the Royal Warrant it holds as one of the Suppliers of Port Wine to Her Majesty The Queen. Although steeped in history as you would expect of a family-run business established in 1692 the forward-thinkers at Taylor’s are also committed to sustainable viticulture and have installed solar panels on three of their properties.
