Sassicaia 2018 Magnum 1500ml

98 points, “The 2017 and 2016 were about power, but the 2018 is about finesse and subtlety.” – James Suckling

98 points, “All about radiance and finesse, this iconic Tuscan red has beguiling aromas of cedar, wild red berry, menthol and pipe tobacco that mingle with fragrant blue flowers.” – Wine Enthusiast

97+ points, “This is a classic vintage of an Italian icon now celebrating its 50th vintage.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

97 points, “The 2018 Sassicaia is fabulous. Bright and beautifully poised, the 2018 opens with brilliant aromatics that make a strong first impression. Delicate and light on its feet, the 2018 is a regal wine that is going to need a number of years to come into its own. Sassicaia is the most finessed of Bolgheri’s top wines. That is very much the case in 2018 as well. I loved it.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

97 points, “One to savour.” – Decanter

The Sassicaia 2018 is a cool classical vintage (remember the “Beast from the East”?). This iconic red always excels in years like this and the critic reviews are testament to that. Volumes were down in 2017 due to drought and our allocation of that vintage has all been snapped up, so everybody was hoping for a little more in 2018. Alas, the volumes were about the same, so there will be a scramble to secure bottles of the exquisite new vintage. Don’t miss out, because we have a sneaking suspicion that the critics are going to adjust their scores upwards as this one matures.

Beautifully balanced and bright, it’s almost as if cassis, raspberry, black olive, cedar, tobacco, dried herbs, menthol, tea, iron, orange zest, dark chocolate and plum pie have been formed into a perfectly spherical marble of flavour and then polished until it shines. Svelte and distinguished, this is a cracking vintage that has earned a place in Sassicaia’s pantheon of greats.

What can you say about the legend that is Sassicaia? Widely acknowledged to be the first Super Tuscan and a catalyst for an Italian winemaking revolution. A wine so controversial it was relegated to a table wine by the restrictive DOC regulations, only to prove so successful and highly revered that it was granted its own DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia – the only single estate to receive this privilege. The first Italian wine to receive 100 points from Robert Parker, a red that regularly beats Bordeaux’s First Growths in blind tasting competitions and one that prompted Jancis Robinson to ask herself “Does my working life get any better than this?” after sampling several vintages from magnum, before concluding “No it does not.” That’s why Decanter Magazine describes it as: “One of the greatest wines in the world, famed and feted for its timeless elegance, balance and longevity.”
