12 Year Old Casa Santana Rum Batch 1 500ml
This is the very first batch of Casa Santana Colombian rum bottled by That Boutique-y Rum Company. And it’s an intriguing one, especially for those who like Cuban rum.
Casa Santana Ron y Licores was established in collaboration with the Cuban government as a way to circumnavigate the trade embargo on Cuban products and provide access into the American market. Based in Barranquilla, Colombia, it’s run by the Riascos family, who also make the Harvey Nichols favourite, Ron La Hechicera. They work with Rum Masters who learnt their art in Cuba before leaving the island in 1994. Together they create Cuban-style rum that can be more freely exported. Casa Santana source new make spirit made by Cuban artisans in Colombia, as well as a little from Panama and Venezuela. They then age them in American white oak barrels from Kentucky, which obviously the Cubans would not have access to.
This one was matured for 12 years before being filled into 3,766 bottles at a warming 58.4%. It’s a complex and intriguing brew, displaying toffee, gingerbread, grilled pineapple, flambéed banana, pecan pie, old leather, melted butter, salted caramel, warm rubber, red chilli, cigar, coffee, prune, dusty wood, festive spices, breakfast tea, those dry black pizza olives and pickle brine. Definitely one for those who like a long tasting note!
Scotch fans will already be well aware of That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s work. The rum spin-off, That Boutique-y Rum Company, is an independent bottler who source the finest rums from the greatest distilleries and add their own unique twist to them, along with distinctive comic book style labels.
