Mother's Ruin Gin Barrel Aged Sour 750ml
Gin was nicknamed ‘Mother’s Ruin’ during the ‘Gin Craze’ of the 1700s, when it was blamed for rising crime, debauchery, prostitution, misery, higher death rates, falling birth rates and more. At the time, the artist and social critic William Hogarth created the famous picture of Gin Lane depicting the devastating impact gin was having on the streets of Great Britain at the time, and its counterpart Beer Street, which suggested that people would be much better of drinking ale. Although gin is unlikely to cause the downfall of society these days, beer is still a cracking alternative, especially when it has been matured in barrels that previously held ‘Mother’s Ruin’.
Thornbridge’s Mother’s Ruin is the last in a series of barrel-aged beers. This golden beer was fermented using three different yeast strains and gently soured using lactobacillus buchneri. It was then combined with spices, including cardamom, cumin, clove and star anise, and Savinjski Goldings hops for bitterness. Maturation was carried out in gin barrels sourced from the Aquitaine region of France for 12 weeks, before being bottled with Champagne yeast and left to evolve. As you can tell, it has been a labour of love and that is very evident when you taste it. With its notes of elderflower, orange blossom, peppery juniper, cinnamon and sour citrus, plus that Champagne-like finish, it’s probably the ultimate summer beer for gin and tonic lovers and craft ale connoisseurs.
This Derbyshire brewery began in 2005, when its founders hired a couple of young brewers to start making beer using second-hand kit at Thornbridge Hall. Now, Thornbridge Brewery is one of the nation’s most respected and most highly rated. Its huge range is exported to over 35 countries around the world and has amassed over 350 industry-recognised awards.
