The 2012 was pure Tempranillo, but the 2013 Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5° marks a return to it having its classic splash of Merlot in the mix. 2013 was a fresher, slightly more challenging vintage, but that is nothing for masters of their art like Vega Sicilia. Despite being the first wine blended by the new Technical Director, Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, this feels like a classic Valbuena 5°. It’s robust yet fresh with blackberry jam, dark chocolate, black olive, vanilla, coconut pyramids topped with a cherry, rolling tobacco, liquorice, praline and coffee beans. We recommend serving this vintage alongside pink lamb chops with tapenade, carpaccio, strong cheese soufflé, steak tartare, roasted aubergine, jambalaya or goulash.
Established in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, Vega Sicilia has been the apogee of Spanish wine for more than a century. It’s the county’s First Growth; Hugh Johnson compares it to Château Latour and Michael Broadbent MW likens it to Château Lafite, meanwhile Jancis Robinson draws comparison with Pomerol and Robert Parker calls it simply “the most prestigious wine estate in Spain”. The estate’s low-yielding old vines – some of which are more than 100 years old – produce perennially high-scoring reds.
Único, which is aged for 10 years before release, is the flagship wine of Ribera del Duero’s Vega Sicilia and many would say of Spain itself. Valbuena 5° comes from younger vines and is aged for 5 years before release. Although many consider it the second wine, for the estate it is a separate entity representing the village of Valbuena where it’s made. However, you view it, Valbuena 5° is a wonderful window into this illustrious estate.
