Only 2 760 bottles of this exquisite wine were made and we got our hands on just a dozen.

Imagine Grand Cru Chablis crafted with bubbles in Tasmania. The fruit for the Single Vineyard Vintage Chardonnay 2013 was picked from Jansz’s special vineyard in Pipers River. It was fermented and aged in French barriques and hogsheads for eight months to gain additional complexity. The best barrels were combined filled into bottles and allowed to mature on the lees (the process that imparts the creamy yeasty and nutty notes that top-flight sparkling is famous for) for over six years developing richness and finesse all the while. What emerges into your glass is a golden elixir with an exceptionally fine bead. Complex notes of sea spray oyster shells lemon curd honeycomb brioche candied lemon peel chalk creamy nougat and freshly baked baguette fill the senses this is clearly a Tasmanian sparkling to rival any Grand Marque Champagne.

Proudly Tasmanian Jansz Tasmania was established in 1986 and named in homage to the Dutch explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman who was the first European to lay eyes on the island in 1642. The region’s likeness to Champagne captured the imagination of Heemskerk Wines and the Champagne house Louis Roederer (producers of the iconic Cristal) who embarked on creating premium Australian sparkling wine there. Alongside the likes of House of Arras the pioneering Jansz sets the benchmark for Australian sparkling wine and the brand was instrumental in putting Tasmania on the wine world’s radar. Now owned by the Australian Hill-Smith family Jansz Tasmania – rated as a five-star winery by James Halliday’s Wine Companion – continue to make world-class wines using the traditional Méthode Champenoise.
