‘Molu’ means ‘where the sun sets’ because the Mapuche – the indigenous people of southern Chile – believed that during the day the stars would hide in the sea becoming starfish much like those pictured on this wine’s label. We wouldn’t mind diving into an ocean of Molu Pinot Noir and hiding there for a while. The grapes come from the Tapihue vineyard in Casablanca Valley and 15% of the wine is matured in French oak for eight months. That light touch with the oak means that vanilla pepper and cinnamon spices sparkle like light dancing on the ocean surface but beneath them are waves and waves of ripe cherry raspberry strawberry and blueberry and a moreish current that pulls you in deeper and deeper. We can’t wait to serve this lightly chilled over the summer or maybe even take a bottle down to the beach and watch the sun set.
Crafted by the highly respected Ventisquero Wine Estate Kalfu is a range of cool climate wines stretching along 600 miles of coastline south of the Atacama Desert. Kalfu means ‘blue’ in the language of the Mapuche. The name is a reference to the omnipresence of the Pacific Ocean but also to the vastness of blue sky that wraps itself over Chile’s majestic landscape.
