You’ve heard of unicorn wines; well let us introduce you to a mermaid wine.

The Mapuche are the indigenous people of southern Chile. They believe in Sumpai mythological beings that are half human and half fish similar to mermaids. Legend has it these Sumpai take care of the rivers lakes and ocean. If Seaspiracy is anything to go by the Sumpai are probably pretty busy at the moment which is presumably why we don’t see them very often. But at least you might get a glimpse of one on the label of this wine bottle…

Kalfu’s Sumpai Syrah 2017 was awarded a whopping score of 95 points by Tim Atkin MW which definitely places it into that mythical category because wines at this price rarely score that highly. The grapes come from Las Terrazas Vineyard in Leyda Valley and the wine has been lovingly matured in oak barrels from Burgundy for 12 months. Juicy red and black fruit flavours combine with peppery spices and Provençal dried herbs like lavender and thyme creating a red that’s screaming out for a Sunday roast or something barbequed. Unfortunately like the Sumpai this wine is rare – we only secured a handful of cases. So if you want one dive in quickly.

Crafted by the highly respected Ventisquero Wine Estate Kalfu is a range of cool climate wines stretching along 600 miles of coastline south of the Atacama Desert. Kalfu means ‘blue’ in the language of the Mapuche. The name is a reference to the omnipresence of the Pacific Ocean but also to the vastness of blue sky that wraps itself over Chile’s majestic landscape. The wines pay homage to the power of the sea and somehow seem to encapsulate the airy freshness freedom and joy of being in the great outdoors.
