The pioneering winemaker Fang Wang was born in China but moved to Germany. It was here that she fell in love with Riesling and decided to try to create one back in her homeland. At the time making Riesling in Ningxia was considered an impossible task. But she proved everyone wrong when she released this phenomenal wine. Dry and zesty it bucks with the energy of a wild horse. Each sip delivers notes of crunchy green apple tangy grapefruit lime zest lemon sorbet and orchard blossom. With a few years in the bottle it’s also starting to develop some of those intriguing petrol notes that make older Riesling such a joy.

Located in the picturesque foothills of the Helan Mountains in Ningxia Kanaan is widely considered one of China’s top wineries. It was established in 2011 by Fang Wang the daughter of Wang Feng Yu who pioneered viticulture in the area. Fang Wang is nicknamed ‘Crazy Fang’ due to her adventurous spirit and her boldness in starting a winery with no prior experience. However her instincts were correct as big players such as Changyu and Dynasty Wine have followed her into the region inspired by her success. But it isn’t easy making wine here. Ningxia is renowned for its harsh winters. So much so that the vines have to be buried by hand in November to protect them from temperatures that can drop to -20°C they then need to be dug back up in April. So hold your horses before you get any ideas of following in Fang Wang’s footsteps. Speaking of which Helan comes from an ancient word meaning ‘horse’ and as you drive alongside them Fang Wang says that the mountains move like horses running at the edge of the sky. Hence the horses on Kanaan’s labels. In short if you’re looking for something a little different then try this dark horse.
