Although only produced in top vintages this is the third great year in a row. On top of which there will be no Reserva 890 released until the 2010 comes of age. So this is another highly anticipated release from La Rioja Alta’s duo of extended-ageing Haro-style reds. Famed for its complexity and immense ageing potential Gran Reserva 904 is a wine to be snapped up immediately especially in a giftable wooden box.
Created using 89% Tempranillo from more than 60-year-old vines with the remainder coming from elegant Graciano. Aged for four and half years in old American oak barrels it ripples with sweet cherry prunes plum crumble vanilla caramelised nuts red pepper balsamic jamon tea leaves walnut coconut mocha and dried flowers. There’s also a wonderful combination of leather saddles smoky tobacco and wood that conjures up thoughts of cowboy saloons. It has now spent five years in the bottle and is developing beautifully making it such an intriguing wine. Positively built for Sunday roasts and slow-cooked stews followed by chocolate desserts and a cheeseboard.
Formed in 1890 by several families La Rioja Alta sets the benchmark for the entire Rioja region. They're famed for their classic Spanish reds which are aged for an inordinately long time. Gran Reserva 904 is named after the year that La Rioja Alta and the Ardanza winery merged 1904.
