93 points, “Perfumed, nicely weighted Crianza from three parcels around the bodega. Youthful bright and alluring, with deftly integrated 75% new wood, some stony reduction, notes of mint, raspberry and black cherry and sculpted tannins.” – Tim Atkin MW

90 points, “Attractive high-toned black cherry fruit, cassis and spice nose, with bold tannins, fleshy fruit, good ageing potential and a long finish.” – Decanter World Wine Awards 2022

When the legendary La Rioja Alta decided to look beyond the confines of Rioja in the 1980s, they took their time because longevity is part of the DNA. After almost a decade of searching they found just the right place in the Ribera del Duero. They painstakingly monitored the plot’s progress for six vintages, selling the fruit until they were happy to put their own name on it. Finally, in 2000, they created the first Áster Tempranillo, or Tinta del País as the locals call it. Now, it tastes like a classic, textbook Crianza – one that feels like it could have been made here for hundreds of years.

Áster Crianza is matured in oak for almost two years, adding sweet spices, tobacco, cocoa and cedar to the black cherry yoghurt, juicy plum, concentrated strawberry and rich forest fruit flavours. Power, elegance and in for the long haul, this wine is like a marathon runner. Tuck it away in the cellar for a few years or open it with the roast on Sunday. Either way, it’s a win-win.
