It’s not easy being Yé-Yé Grisé or to explain what it is for that matter. This is a wine you simply have to try…

Yé-Yé Grisé is a limited release blend made in an Australian township called Denmark using Gewürztraminer grown near a place called Gnomesville and Riesling from Mount Barker. They’re located in an up-and-coming region called Great Southern which – aided by climate change and the cooling influence of Antarctica – is producing some of Oz’s most exciting wines. No sulphur is added just a splash of Pinot to enhance the colour. Although the name Grisé means grey it is also a conjugation of the verb griser meaning to intoxicate or fascinate. And we can confirm that this white wine is intoxicatingly fascinating and to any naysayers we say Yé-Yé.

With a copper hue it leaps out of the glass with a perfume of rose petals lilies jasmine and lime blossom. On the tongue it speaks of fresh cream lemons Turkish delight and white tea and it’s begging to be served up with Vietnamese summer rolls Thai green curry tagine a korma or even a toastie smeared with harissa.

La Violetta takes its name from an old Piedmontese song celebrating the joys of a little intoxication. So that gives you a feel for what winemaker Andrew “AJ” Hoadley is going for. This is drinkable fun; pure and simple. Hoadley bumped into a French winemaker travelling to see the Great Wall of China and the rest is history. He’s worked in Beaujolais Montrachet Piedmont Abruzzo Washington State and all over his homeland via stints at Aussie big boys De Bortoli and Hardy’s so he really knows his onions. All we can say is: get involved.
