“This naturally fermented Hárslevelü from a 30-year-old vineyard is well worth tracking down.” – Tim Atkin

“Really fascinating… I suspect that little orange grace note is a masterstroke.” – Jancis Robinson

One of South Africa’s truly cult wines. Hárslevelü is a grape variety most famed for its use in Hungary’s Tokaji. South Africa only has around 24 hectares of it planted and Lemberg has the lion’s share. 80% is fermented in French oak 15% undergoes carbonic maceration (like Beaujolais) before being transferred to Hungarian oak and the final 5% is made as an orange wine (the juice spending a prolonged period on the crushed skins). Only around 260 cases of six were made so we’re lucky to have snagged some. Expect a long complex and bracing vegan-friendly white wine layered with marmalade toasted almonds peach apricot honeysuckle lime zest hay candlewax and smoke. But don’t expect our handful of cases to hang around for long.

Surrounded by mountains and pressed up against the uber-trendy Swartland Tulbagh is one of South Africa’s lesser-known wine regions but stylishly intriguing wineries like Lemberg look set to put it firmly on the fine wine map. Established in 1978 Lemberg became famous for being the smallest estate on the Western Cape but now it’s loved for producing some of the country’s most intriguing innovative and unique wines. Although proudly South African their story is strongly tied to Europe. Lemberg is the old name for Lviv the city then in Poland and now in the Ukraine that the original winemaker’s husband came from; they are renowned for the ever-fascinating Hungarian grape variety Hárslevelü; and visitors are welcomed by their four English bulldogs.
