As a working farm, Lochlea’s seasonal small batch releases tie-in to reflect the farming calendar. The highly anticipated follow-up to the first peated edition, Lochlea Ploughing Edition Second Crop is designed with an icy blue label to reflect the bitterly cold Ayrshire weather in winter when the farm prepares the fields for sowing.

This warming and smoky expression, matured in ex-Islay barrels and peated quarter casks, is bottled without colouring and non-chill filtered. You’ll find it bursting with similar flavours to the First Crop Edition, with apple pie, pear drop, oatcake, malted milk biscuit and dry hay notes shining through. The intriguing layers of Islay-like smoke heighten the nuttiness and develop to reveal delicate hints of succulent fruit and sea salt on the finish. This warm peaty whisky is the perfect dram to sip on through the cold winter months, particularly with feet raised in front of the fire.

Lochlea was a livestock farm when it was acquired in 2006. The piggery became the distillery, the cattle sheds were turned into bonded warehouses and the pasture was converted to barley fields. It’s a site rich in history as the celebrated Scottish poet Robert Burns lived at Lochlea Farm between 1777 and 1784, no doubt toiling over the same soil that this fiercely independent family-owned distillery now does. As Rabbie famously wrote “Freedom an’ whisky gang thegither.” So raise a dram to a new free spirit from Scotland.
