Although an incredible wine some were surprised that Louis Roederer released Cristal 2002 as early as they did. But in a fascinating move they held some back. These bottles were kept in their cellars for nine years after disgorgement just so that they could unleash this even more fabulous Late Release on the world. The original received 98 points from Wine Advocate and this is even better.
In those intervening years it has become even richer even more intense and even more like a sparkling Grand Cru Burgundy. The additional time has imparted vanilla decadent truffle chalk lemon posset mille-feuille and menthol to the sumptuous layers of white chocolate truffles crème caramel pepper lemon meringue pie and oak spices. It manages to be both familiar but also an entirely new expression that will have Champagne lovers enraptured.
2002 is a benchmark year; Jancis Robinson describes it as “a magnificent vintage for champagne”. Cristal is a seminal Champagne whatever the vintage so in a year of this quality it’s quite simply a must. World-renowned Champagne critic Richard Juhlin says of this Champagne: “Every vintage is stunning. Buy all the Roederer wines you come across.” Which is easier said than done considering that most of the original release sold out long ago
