Whisky makers are responsible for some of our all-time favourite gins – think of Tobermory The Lakes Distillery Cotswolds and The Botanist made by Bruichladdich. So when Sweden’s superstar distillers Mackmyra released this well we just knew it would be something special. And that was confirmed by a Gold Medal at the World Gin Awards shortly after.
Created using a dazzling array of organic botanicals Lab + Distillery Organic Gin is bursting with Scandinavian flavours and glacial freshness probably because many of the ingredients were foraged locally when the snow abates. Mackmyra is a cult distillery on a stellar trajectory which is why they had to move their whisky production to a larger facility. This ultra-modern gin is crafted in the original site – where Mackmyra’s journey began – using a copper pot still juniper coriander lemon elderflower lingonberry and mango. Crisp and buzzing with an electric energy it presents bright fruit reminiscent of fresh lemons mango sorbet and crunchy cranberries as well as floral and herbal notes and a twist of peppery spice. Designed for classic cocktails this works exceptionally well in a Dry Martini and a gin and tonic but one our favourite ways to drink it is straight out of the freezer with a slice of green apple.
Mackmyra located in the province of Gästrikland opened its doors in 1999 becoming the first distillery in Sweden to create whisky. Although their pot still comes from Rothes in Scotland pretty much everything else that goes into making their single malts is Swedish including the sweet barley (which they smoke themselves over peat and juniper twigs) the yeast the peat from a local bog near Österfärnebo and the crystal-clear water drawn from a spring fed by the Valboåsen hills. They even cooper Swedish oak from a forest located on the island of Visingsö to make some of their barrels. The whiskies are then matured in a warehouse 50 metres underground in the Bodäs mine which was once dug for ore then used to grow mushrooms and is now home to some of the finest whisky on Earth. The whiskies have garnered such a strong reputation that Mackmyra opened a deluxe second site at Gävle this impressive climate-smart and gravity-fed facility stands some 35m high. Mackmyra can now rival many Scottish distilleries in terms of output but unlike their Scotch counterparts they produce no blended whisky just single malt and a little gin.
