97 points “An excellent example of a Tokaji nose with lovely dried apricot honey straw and lime peel notes. The palate is rich and ripe with lovely acidity and freshness. Loads of spice and real finesse. A benchmark for Tokaji.” – The International Wine & Spirit Competition 2020

Mád Wine is located in the unique village of Mád which is the most prestigious appellation of the Tokaj region. Make whatever jokes you like about the name of the village but grapes grown on its volcanic soils create some of the world’s greatest sweet wines.

As the name suggests the Furmint Sárgamuskotály and Hárslevel? grapes for Mád Late Harvest Tokaji 2017 are picked late in the season when the natural sugar level is high. But what makes it so special is its refreshing acidity which perfectly balances the sticky honey sweetness. Unoaked and vegan friendly this dessert wine is breezy and floral like a wildflower meadow but it’s also intensely fruity and deeply complex. There’s a little bit of funky botrytis character sneaking in there adding a little intriguing savouriness and notes of marmalade spice and sultana. As the IWSC say this sets the benchmark for the category and you’d be ‘Mád’ to miss it.

Consider pairing with rich pâté (we particularly like a mushroom one) stinky blue cheese spicy dishes (think Sichuan or Thai) miso roasted aubergine sticky sesame tofu or puddings like crème brûlée Tarte Tatin crumbles orange polenta cake or almost any chocolate-based dessert. Oooh you’re in for a treat.
