The Manly Spirits Co. was not created to bring out the inner caveman in its drinkers or further elevate the position of the patriarchy. Wife and husband team Vanessa Wilton and David Whittaker simply wanted to capture the relaxed and cheerful vibes of their home on Australia’s New South Wales coastline. That place just happens to be called Manly and its sandy beach is “seven miles from Sydney a thousand miles from care” according to them. Times have changed since Captain Arthur Phillip landed on this beach and wrote of the indigenous people he encountered that “their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place.” Presumably he wrote this sometime after the spear had been removed from his shoulder. Sorry we digress. Anyway Manly Spirits Co. aren’t so into labelling things other than their bottles; they make small-batch artisan spirits for everyone in copper stills named after the founders’ four children. Taking inspiration and botanicals from the sea they’ve crafted a fabulous array of happy-go-lucky gins vodkas and liqueurs and their highly anticipated whiskey is maturing in oak as you read this. This is a distillery making waves.
