97 points “Blackberry and ripe-fruit aromas with black liquorice and dark chocolate. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy-textured tannins and a long flavourful finish that is so precise and polished. Great length. Best ever?” – James Suckling

It’s a good question and we’d be tempted to say “Yes!”

Dalmau is Marqués de Murrieta’s most modern Rioja. The Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon and Graciano grapes are harvested from the Canajas vineyard on the Ygay Estate. These then undergo a strict selection process with only the finest grapes getting through and around 50% being discarded. The wine is then matured in French oak casks for 23 months.

The resulting Rioja Reserva is herby with notes of balsamic reduction hedgerow brambles dark chocolate granary toast and vanilla cream. Consider partnering it with slow-cooked meats such as game oxtail and roast lamb or dishes with real depth of flavour like Hungarian goulash Mexican mole cassoulet roasts and grills.

Establishing his winery in 1852 Luciano Murrieta produced the first-ever Rioja exported before anyone else in the region and built a grand “château” on the Ygay Estate inspired by Bordeaux. So that tells you where the idea to include Cabernet Sauvignon in this wine came from.
