96 points “A precise and polished red with cherry, plum, slate, iron, and powdered earth. It's medium- to full-bodied with sublime tannins that are beautifully integrated into the wine. It's structured, yet the tannins are very silky. It's curated and thoughtful. Two years in American oak (10% new) and 14 months in bottle. Sophisticated and very drinkable, but will age nicely.” - James Suckling
93 points “The 2019 Rioja Reserva, their flagship wine, comes from the 300 hectares of estate vineyards. Here, Tempranillo is the backbone, making up 87% of the wine in the low-yielding vintage of 2019 and complemented with 6% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha. This is the second vintage in the new winery. It’s a balsamic and spicy version – a wine with muscle that they aged for a longer time in barrel, and it's more traditional and serious. It's ripe at 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.65 and 5.3 grams of acidity. They seek balance between fruit and oak, looking for freshness. A more powerful year.” - Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The Marqués de Murrieta Reserva 2019 comes highly rated by the critics as always. 2019 is a brilliant example of the elegant, consistent and traditional wines that characterise the Marqués de Murrieta vineyard and shows the incredible personality of the Ygay Estate. Produced using a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha grapes, the balance, finesse, depth and complexity shine through.
What is drawn from the American oak barrels after 24 months of maturing is a sleek and stylish wine with strawberry, cherry and red plum fruits bursting through alongside notes of black pepper, sandalwood, Mediterranean herbs, red tea and hints of gentle ageing. It is well balanced with silky tannins, lively fruit and fresh acidity leading to a long, elegant finish. An excellent vintage that pairs exquisitely with roast lamb, seared duck breast, jamón, roasted vegetables, truffles, slow-cooked mushrooms and caramelised onions.
Luciano Murrieta produced the first ever Rioja exported before anyone else in the region and built a grand “château” on the Ygay Estate inspired by Bordeaux. The wines from this estate are aged for substantially longer than the required legal period, meaning it therefore sits at the very pinnacle of the region’s hierarchy. In fact, when Tim Atkin ranked the producers of Rioja based “only on the quality of the winery and its wines” he placed Marqués de Murrieta in the very top echelon as a First Growth.
