For many of us who are looking to make lifestyle changes but maybe not drop the alcohol entirely Mary is the answer. Alcohol unequivocally has a taste so removing it entirely changes the experience of drink. That’s why Mary has just a little bit. At 6% ABV it’s less than a sixth of the alcohol content of most gins but it’s equally delicious when mixed with premium tonic water. (When mixed it’s also eight times less alcoholic than a glass of wine.) As Women’s Health Magazine puts it the 6% “makes it feel like a genuine G&T when garnished with ice and your choice of fancy addition like cucumber mint or lemon” concluding that it’s “ideal for a weekend kickback hangover-free.” The other added bonus is that Mary has no added sugars sweeteners or artificial flavours making it completely plant based and only nine calories per 25ml shot.
Mary is created by London’s Illogical Drinks who are headed up by Eric Sampers the former brand director for Pernod Ricard’s Beefeater Gin – so he clearly knows his onions when it comes to gin and botanical alternatives. Distilled with basil thyme sage coriander seed angelica root juniper and pine needles it tastes like a country garden in summertime. Long and dry there’s the peppery juniper of gin lots of vibrant basil and thyme a zesty menthol freshness (magically because it doesn’t contain any citrus or anything minty) and lots of lingering herbal sage on the finish. Mix one part Mary to two parts tonic (or soda) over ice and garnish to your taste (we love harvesting the garden herbs for this) and then wave goodbye to your dear old friend gin forever.
