Meerlust constantly amazes us. Their ability to produce exceptional wines in both a Bordeaux and Burgundy style is uncanny. The 2018 Merlot is no different as it easily rivals most Right Bank Bordeaux and Californian offerings.
Don’t be fooled by the label as this is not a pure Merlot. Meerlust’s exceptional winemaker Chris Williams has slipped 11% Cabernet Franc (for structure and freshness) and 3% Petit Verdot (for polish and floral aromas) into the mix, and we think it might be his best yet when it comes to this expression. Intense, concentrated and crimson red, it displays intense fruit characteristics with ripe plum and dark cherry notes underpinned with herb and oak spice alongside complex cherry and tobacco. Delicious to drink on any occasion or let age in the cellar and watch as it gains in complexity and suppleness. Open it on those dark cold nights when only comfort food and a glass of warming red will suffice or present it to someone special when a stand out gift tin makes an even bigger impression.
