93 points “This Bordeaux blend has led the field in Stellenbosch since it was created in 1980: naturally extracted warmth and depth make an elegantly vigorous classic.” – Steven Spurrier for Decanter

Julius Caesar changed the course of Roman politics when he and his troops crossed the Rubicon in 49BC and from that there was no turning back. Some two millennia later Nico Myburgh changed the course of South African wine when inspired by the wines of Bordeaux he blended his Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot together something that had rarely done before that point. Meerlust Rubicon was born and there has been no turning back for South African wine.

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is hugely dense pumped full of hedgerow brambles mint blackcurrants black plums olive rose petals liqueur chocolates and cherry pie with whipped vanilla cream. First made in 1980 this 2014 vintage in magnum format demonstrates how Rubicon just seems to get better and better with each passing year. Serve alongside slow-cooked winter fare and let it warm you with all that South African sunshine.

The Myburgh family has been making wine at Meerlust Estate for eight generations stretching back to 1756 - to think that some people call this the New World! Drive up the long palm tree-lined driveway and you’ll discover the iconic white manor house on top of a granite outcrop 5km from False Bay. The hot vineyards are cooled by the refreshing ocean breezes helping the Myburghs to create wines with finesse.
