The 2023 Midleton Very Rare is special because it’s only the third to be released under Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman’s tenure and is the 40th edition of Midleton Very Rare.
Representing Ireland’s most acclaimed and coveted whiskey, Midleton Very Rare is a blend of the finest distillates handpicked by the Master Distiller, formerly by Master Distillers Emeritus Barry Crockett and Brian Nation, and now by their successor Kevin O’Gorman. Blended using whiskey aged between 12 and 33 years that have been matured in lightly charred ex-Bourbon barrels, the 2023 Edition is less pronounced but continues the legacy of vanilla and chocolate notes, as well as hints of spice, grain and zest.
Originally launched in 1984 to celebrate the whiskeys of the Midleton distillery, a new vintage has been released every year since then. Each bottle carries an individual number and the signature of the Master Distiller. The individual nature of the selection process for each vintage of Midleton Very Rare means that each year’s vintage provides its own character. This one displays fresh pear, tangy lemon sherbet, mandarin orange peel, toffee apple, crème brûlée, banana, peach, dried apricot, sweet oak, vanilla, creamy marzipan, praline, almond croissant, runny honey, peppery spices, nutmeg, guajillo chilli, toast and prickly Chinese chilli oil. Prized among collectors, only around 50 casks of Midleton are released every year, so it really is extremely rare. A whisky that lives up to its name.
