Montanya Oro Rum is matured for a year in American white oak barrels still wet with Laws Colorado Whiskey. This gives it a rich full-bodied flavour and a charming oak influence that have earned it a trophy cabinet full of medals and the “USA Rum of the Year” at the Berlin International Spirits Competition in 2017. Just before bottling the tiniest touch of Colorado honey is added to enhance the natural flavour (around 0.04% per bottle so don’t expect any discernible sweetness). Apart from that there’s no sugar molasses caramel or artificial colours and flavouring added so what you taste is all natural. A deeply warming rum with highlights of spicy red chilli apple pie chocolate-covered coffee beans crème brûlée and caramelised pineapple. Sip it neat when you come in from the cold or mix it into a Mai Tai a Rum Sour or a twist on the Manhattan. Oro is also a great one for whisky drinkers who are looking to transition into rum.
Karen Hoskins fell in love with rum while on holiday in Goa India. Inspired by rums made in the high mountains of Guatemala she decided to make her own and set up Montanya Distillers in the impossibly picturesque Crested Butte Colorado. Their small-batch artisanal rums are made at high altitude using love; a barrel-load of integrity; alembic copper pot stills over open flames; Louisiana-grown farm-sourced sugar cane (they are great friends with the farmers); and pure Colorado mountain spring water drawn from an snowmelt-fed aquifer beneath the distillery. Don’t expect the intense tropical fruit and full-on wood found in their tropical counterparts these are quite unique cold-climate rums with more of a spice and kernel character.
