Montanya’s limited-edition Valentia Rum is an homage to the progress of women in distilling. Valentia means courage or bravery in Spanish – a rather apt name to celebrate those who have battled the odds to come out on top of an all too male-dominated industry. It has been matured for four years in American white oak barrels that previously held Laws Colorado Whiskey before being finished in a Rye barrel from Catoctin Creek – another female-owned and female-run distillery. Montanya donate a portion of the proceeds from Valentia to benefit the Women of the Vine and Spirits Foundation which supports education and personal development for women in the alcohol beverage industry.
Unlike Montanya’s other rums Valentia receives no addition of honey making it completely vegan friendly. The result is a rum with a dry almost whiskey-like character displaying notes of freshly hewn wood vanilla fiery ginger chai honeysuckle rye bread and peppery spice. We love it neat sipped over ice topped up with ginger beer or mixed with ginger wine to make a rum twist on the Whisky Mac.
Karen Hoskins fell in love with rum while on holiday in Goa India. Inspired by rums made in the high mountains of Guatemala she decided to make her own and set up Montanya Distillers in the impossibly picturesque Crested Butte Colorado. This Rocky Mountain rum company is B-Corp Certified which means they are all-round good eggs who are totally on it when it comes to the environment sustainability their people their supply chain and giving back to the community. They are leading a global movement to put people and the planet before profit.
Their small-batch artisanal rums are made at high altitude using love; a barrel-load of integrity; alembic copper pot stills over open flames; Louisiana-grown farm-sourced sugar cane (they are great friends with the farmers); and pure Colorado mountain spring water drawn from an snowmelt-fed aquifer beneath the distillery. Don’t expect the intense tropical fruit and full-on wood found in their tropical counterparts these are quite unique cold-climate rums with more of a spice and kernel character. Perfect after a day in the mountains.
