Every year since 2001 Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. What makes them so exciting is Diageo’s unparalleled ability to cherry-pick anything from a lost barrel produced at a ‘ghost’ distillery to an experimental expression from a world-renowned brand. These are one-of-a-kind bottlings that are not to be missed…

Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender Craig Wilson the 2021 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. Each bottle carries a QR code providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries as told by Scottish actors Siobhan Redmond and Lorne MacFadyen and the digital artist Ken Taylor. Fans of Game of Thrones and the accompanying whiskies will find much to love here.

Mortlach 13 Year Old Special Release 2021 is so good we let out a little howl on tasting it. Mortlach is famed for its use of Sherry casks which makes this an interesting expression because it has been matured in a combination of virgin and refill American oak. That makes this a Mortlach the likes of which is seldom tasted. Gingerbread oaty flapjack nutty brittle woody spices rum and raisin ice cream dark chocolate apple pie vanilla cream and these unusual sweet smoky and meaty barbeque notes. If Mortlach was a car it would be one of those massive monster trucks. For this version they’ve added lots of shiny chrome and spotlights so that it dazzles as it crushes everything in its path. In a good way though!

Mortlach distillery was nicknamed ‘The Beast of Dufftown’ by whisky critic Dave Broom because of its robust muscular waxy and often meaty character. This is said to come from the unusual technique of distilling the spirit 2.81 times a process the distillery calls ‘The Way’. Its bold flavour without any smoke made this Speyside whisky an integral component for Johnnie Walker. But now you can enjoy it in its pure and unadulterated beastliness. For anyone looking for oomph and richness without the environmentally problematic use of peat Mortlach is the answer.
