Every year since 2001, Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. What makes them so exciting is Diageo’s unparalleled ability to cherry-pick anything from a lost barrel produced at a ‘ghost’ distillery to an experimental expression from a world-renowned brand. These are one-of-a-kind bottlings that are not to be missed…

For 2023, The Special Releases are inspired by crafts and cultures around the world. Titled Spirited Xchange, the highly collectible and unique collection takes us on a journey through Diageo’s world-famous portfolio with cultural collaborations for unforgettable flavours and tastes.

Mortlach’s The Katana Edge Special Release is finished in a combination of ex-Kanosuke Japanese whisky and ex-Pinot Noir casks for an intriguing flavour profile. Promising a unique tasting experience, this stunning single malt unveils a rogue flash of umami that cuts through the savoury sweetness for an elegant and full-bodied expression.

Mortlach distillery was nicknamed ‘The Beast of Dufftown’ by whisky critic Dave Broom, because of its robust, muscular, waxy and often meaty character. This is said to come from the unusual technique of distilling the spirit 2.81 times, a process the distillery calls ‘The Way’. Its bold flavour without any smoke, made this Speyside whisky an integral component for Johnnie Walker. But now, you can enjoy it in its pure and unadulterated beastliness. For anyone looking for oomph and richness without the environmentally problematic use of peat, Mortlach is the answer. We recommend enjoying it by moonlight or for Halloween, and maybe with a drop or two of water to douse the flames of that 58% ABV.
