Italo Disco is a limited-edition collaboration between Mr Black and ST. ALi Coffee Roasters (one of Australia’s speciality coffee pioneers). Australia’s coffee obsession can be traced back to a generation of Italians who settled in Sydney and Melbourne. A few arrived in the 1930s but there were many more after World War II. They brought with them a love of big brash and bittersweet Italian dark roast espresso and the country’s café culture was born. This liqueur is an homage to them.
Some of Mr Black’s previous limited editions have been delicate and nuanced but Italo Disco is quite the opposite. Made with a dark espresso roast from Brazil it’s a huge coffee hit with notes of rich caramel dark chocolate orange zest candied nuts honeycomb cherry liqueur and spices. Stick on some late-1970s or early-1980s Italo Disco music and pour this liqueur over ice. Garnish with a twist of orange peel and travel back in time.
In 2013 Mr Black was launched. The now multi-award-winning cold press coffee liqueur was created to transition Australia’s booming coffee culture into the night time’s revelry. The men behind it are Tom Baker and Philip Moore the former being a self-professed coffee nerd and the latter being one of Australia’s most highly awarded distillers. United by their love of bitter black beverages they’ve never looked back.
Unlike every other coffee liqueur Mr Black is entirely cold extracted and contains no added flavourings caramels or vanillas. It’s a coffee liqueur that tastes like speciality coffee. The cold extraction – 23°C in the case of Mr Black – results in a less acidic brew with a rounder mouthfeel and big coffee flavour. This is perfect for creating a liqueur that stands up to blending with spirits which is exactly what Mr Black does. Created to be drunk straight over ice with a twist but it also gives a decadent caffeinated coffee kick to both classic cocktails and new-world coffee cocktails alike.
