“Gravels Grenache would be easy to overlook but that would be a mistake… a delicious reminder of why it’s worth finding those precious vineyard sites that suit the variety. It’s a mouth-watering wine that’s also chiselled and has great structure.” – JancisRobinson.com

Only 4800 bottles of this were made and ever since being named a “Wine of the Week” on Jancis Robinson’s website demand has skyrocketed.

The Newfound Gravel Grenache is an absolute cracker. It’s an intriguing mix of savoury herbs chalk rose petal violet cedar red plums red cherry bramble and tangy raspberry. The acidity makes it really food friendly (we’re thinking barbeque teriyaki cassoulet and rabbit) the tannin suggests it will age (if you can fight the urge to pull the cork) and to quote the expert view of JancisRobinson.com “it’s simply a pleasure to drink”. It comes from three very different vineyards (Cemetery Scaggs and Yount Mill) which gives it oodles of complexity it was fermented with wild yeasts and it was matured in oak for a year. Oh and it should not be missed.

Newfound Wines was set up by Audra Chapman and Matt Naumann a pair of industry veterans who were keen to focus on nature-led farming. They bought a 40-acre ranch in California’s Sierra Foothills and began building a family legacy. They believe that farming is not just a connection to the land but to the universe maybe taking more of a lead from indigenous people than the more commercialised side of the wine industry. Their winemaking process leans into instinct experience and listening to the wine rather than the hard science and refinement adopted by many. The grapes are often foot trodden and the wines which are bottle unfined and unfiltered are often labelled as the broader California AVA allowing them more flexibility and to be able to offer more affordable wines that overdeliver on their price. The vineyards that they tend are a ramshackle glorious and organic bunch one was planted after Prohibition and is owned by the city of Ukiah one is super-steep and owned by the musician Boz Scaggs one has been converted to no-till farming and another is packed with old Carignan vines that would make the “Old World” producers of France and Spain quite jealous.
