TRIED AND TESTED: HEAT X CRYO
Our Beauty Editor is in the hot seat
I – like many – have tried (and loved) the oh-so-cool 111Cryo. So, when the brand announced it was reversing the concept and turning up the heat, I was intrigued. How would this work? What would the benefits be?
The premise is that just like the original Cryo, it ‘tricks’ our body into implementing the same response it would have in extreme environments. For maximum results, you are advised to step into Cryo’s ice-cold chamber, initiating the fight-or-flight response (and the accompanying muscle recovery, calorie burning and endorphin release), before Heat x Cryo’s hot and massaging, skin-glowing wellness pod. The two together equate to both a killer workout and accompanying spa session.
But would the newest shock treatment really send adrenalin-pumping shivers down my spine like Cryo, or would I simply be entering a glorified sauna? Thirty hot and sweaty minutes in ‘the pod’ later, I discovered all you need to know.
THERE ARE 22 DIFFERENT WELLNESS SETTINGS
You can try anything from the aromatherapy-based ‘Cleanse’ to the curious-sounding ‘Celiminate’ and the low-intensity ‘Sunshine’. Each has variant heat, massage and LED light settings depending on the desired outcome. Naturally, I opted for ‘Beauty Care’ which consisted in medium-intensity whole-body massage and cleansing aromatherapy with blue/green facial lights.
THERE ARE FIVE DIFFERENT AROMA SETTINGS
They include ‘Health’, ‘Cleanse’ and ‘Energise’ and are all infused with different essential oils to stimulate olfactory senses. My favourite? The camomile-infused ‘Relaxation’. But – to be honest – I could get used to any kind of scented air gently flowing over my face and body.
YOU CAN OVERRIDE AND CUSTOMISE AS YOU GO
One setting for the whole 30 minutes? Not this time – my new home for 30 minutes was far too fun to not explore. Before I knew it, I was reaching for the buttons and enjoying bursts of heat, before retreating to more comfortable, low-intensity treatments that would ensure I wouldn’t be too sweaty for my mother’s birthday dinner.
IT’S LED LIGHT LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE
A key part of Heat X Cryo is the 25 LED light modules that are built into the body chamber. Not only do these create your very own disco-effect light show, but they also work hard to rejuvenate your skin cells. Yellow, for example, calms inflammation and generates collagen. Red is best for targeting acne, and green helps with hyperpigmentation and sun spots. I didn’t feel any effects at the time, but I certainly received several comments the next day on my glowing skin.
YOU BURN CALORIES BY LYING ON YOUR BACK
I’m all for a good workout, but if you can tone up without the, well, exercise bit, that’s even better. According to the pod (calories are monitored on the screen throughout), I burned just under 100 calories in 30 minutes. The estimation is based on your height, weight and how much you sweat, with the infrared causing your body to sweat more effectively. So, amp up the heat if you want to see more results.
YOU CAN EVEN DO A HIIT
If getting trim is a key focus, you can do HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) exercises in your pod. Admittedly, I didn’t. But next time I go (and there will be a next time), I will. Options included bicep curls with the in-pod exercise band. Very modern.
YOU GET TO HAVE A WHOLE-BODY MASSAGE FOR HALF AN HOUR
Forget all of the wonderful health-boosting features and there’s still something to be said for taking some time out of your day to enjoy some ‘good vibrations’. My full-body treatment kicked my sluggish muscles back into action – and ensured that I made the most of my terribly difficult review task.
AND, FINALLY, THE POD MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE A TRANSFORMER
Or, it did for me at least. No judgement please – the whole experience surprisingly pleasurable and thoroughly effective. For those looking for maximum results with minimum time and effort, this is for you.
