This Ramadan, we have also collaborated with illustrator Ethar Balkhair, to bring the beauty and light of Ramadan to Harvey Nichols. We spoke to her about the importance of this time and embracing the spirit of the holy month.
Why were you excited to collaborate with Harvey Nichols on this project?
I was super excited when Harvey Nichols reached out to me for this project. Since I started my career, it has been a dream to collaborate with such an iconic brand, especially for celebrating this inspiring spiritual holy month.
What was your inspiration behind the illustrations?
I am inspired by Ramadan’s atmosphere, the light of the moon, plus the dreamy and spiritual Ramadan sky reflected from our window. The series of illustrations tell a story of this light that brightened our month – by illustrating the iconic celestial symbols that embody Ramadan and cultural diversity, including exaggerated plants, and dynamic architecture and patterns in the Islamic world.
What is the importance of light in your work?
I called this series Let Your Light Brighten Our Days, highlighting the shine of the moon and stars through the window. This conveys my emotional connection with this holy month, and how it enlightens my soul spiritually, and emotionally.
What does observing Ramadan mean to you?
Ramadan is a blessed month for me, it’s a special period of fasting, worship, renewal, purity and self-reflection. I enjoy the special rituals with family and friends gathering and creating beautiful moments. Throughout my illustrations I tried to mimic and reflect my emotions in this holy month to convey its spirit.
