Fenty Beauty: The Takeover

That time Rihanna came to Harvey Nichols

The Launch

“They queued for hours in the rain, a long, snaking line of women desperate
to get into one of London's top department stores.”

The Times, 09.09.17

Rihanna never does things by halves and the exclusive UK launch of Fenty Beauty, certainly arrived with a bang. Hundreds of posters lined Knightsbridge underground station as beauty devotees emerged to form a mile long queue at 8am. Hoards of crowds were seen across the country as Harvey Nichols opened its doors nationwide, with 10,000 online customers also logging on for a first look at the new generation of beauty online. The Party

When Rihanna flies 3,500 miles for a party, you know to expect big things. Little wonder then, that our star-studded launch was the hottest ticket at London Fashion Week.

Amid tight security and secrecy (this is Rihanna after all), the crowd gathered with escalating excitement.

A hotbed of social influencer talent and VIP guests including new Vogue Editor Edward Enninful, model Leomie Anderson and singer Talia Storm (pictured), were taken on an experiential journey exploring the five different Fenty Beauty stations; Artistry, Gloss Bomb, Match Stix, Killawatt and Blotting. While playing with products, guests snacked on Prosecco-flavoured doughnuts and fortune cookies that revealed custom Fenty fates.

But it was before the party had even started that our Bajan queen produced the highlight of the night. Six lucky (and unsurprisingly shaky) customers were plucked from the swirling queue outside and invited for a makeover with the Fenty Beauty Global Artistry Team, including Global Artist Hector Espinal and Resident artist James Kaliardos.

Resplendent in a lilac dress by Molly Goddard, the superstar then popped in and surprised her awestruck fans to talk makeup, magic and more before heading down to spend a night dancing to a live set from DJ Debby Coda.

With litres of Ace of Spades Champagne, Don Julio tequila cocktails and Peroni beer, the rest of the night was a blur of swirling shapes and starry-eyes.

The Windows

It's not often you are tasked with making a 40cm-wide black marker pen, but when it comes to graffiting eight windows RiRi style, you need the best tools in the business. It has taken a team of five people, seven nights and a total of 210 hours to give our Knightsbridge windows the total Fenty Beauty makeover. A teaser was built up over the course of a week with a new layer added every night; featuring 1,200 A4 sheets of adhesive film, 15 cans of spray paint and, of course, that bespoke black marker. Watch our timelapse video of the windows in motion, Rihanna liked it so much she shared it with her 56 million Instagram followers!
